Has anyone ever planted one of those fluffy seeds from a cottonwood tree?

Are there any commercial or other uses for seeds from a cottonwood tree?

Never have, but I do know that the seed must be packed in mud and kept wet, for the seed to germinate. The city where I live does not allow them, as they are to messy. Years ago, people wanting a tree would dig one out of sand bar and plant them in town. Cotton wood hybrids are available at nursery's as they do not produce seeds.
