when climbing a hill once you get down some it will shift automatically down in a lower gear so you ca pick up speed. but if you feel like you need to use 2nd or 1st then you should slow down some before shifting into a lower gear.

If you want to tell the car to downshift, typically you just shift the lever to 3.

You do not need to lift or slowdown. It is computer controlled anyway.

Usually though, you can just step on it if you want to accelerate and the system should downshift accordingly.

The "manual" shifting is more if the system is "searching" and keeps switching between gears, or on a less responsive system.

Take your foot off the gas, shift the gear, then put your foot back on the gas. It's that simple.

you don't have to do anything if the engine thinks it needs to gear down than it will if the hill isn't steep than you will have enough momentum to get up the hill
