Debussy and the Schindler's List soundtrack fall under the 'genre' of music 'classical' music. I put 'classical' in quotes because that is a blanket (general) term people use to describe music created during the Renaissance Era, Baroque Era, Classical Era, and Romantic Era. For example, Bach composed music during the Baroque period, and Chopin composed during the Romantic Era, yet when referring to either of these composers music, most people would simply say, "I love Bach and Chopin's classical music!".
.
I am more than happy to give you names of composers who fit the style of music you are looking for. I wish I could list individual pieces here because I'm sure that would help you in the long run, considering these composers have HUGE catalogs of music--they've all written TONS of instrumentals, some pieces slow and melancholy, others medium tempo and happy sounding, others up-tempo. In other words, Beethoven, for example wrote probably the most famous 'meloncholy' piano piece of music, but this piece is part of a 'sonata'. A sonata has three parts: each part is a different tempo. (The Beethoven piece I am referring to is nicknamed "Moonlight Sonata", the official title being "Piano Sonata No. 14 in C sharp minor, op.27:adagio sostenuto."
It was written in honor of a young woman who broke Beethoven's heart. This is THE most melancholy--yet breathtakingly beautiful--piece of music I have ever heard. I highly recommend you buy the version performed by Vladimir Askenazy.)
.
Some composers who wrote meloncholy instrumental pieces that you might enjoy:
.
BEETHOVEN
(check out his piano sonatas)
.
CHOPIN
(piano: check out his 'nocturnes'
)
.
MOZART (sonatas)
.
HADYN (piano concertos)
.
SAMUEL BARBER
(most of his music is...hhmmmm, how to describe...a bit 'eerie', if you will.
I HIGHLY recommend you specifically check out his piece called "Adagio For Strings"-- talk about melancholy!! haha!)
.
BACH
(his catalogue is HUGE. May I suggest his violin concertos--namely "Air". Also, his Brandenburg Concertos are filled with strings--i.e. violins.)
.
BRAHMS
(I find his violin pieces haunting--not exactly melancholy--but I would check out his work.)
.
If you have access to iTunes, maybe search for an iMix titled "Melancholy / Moody classical music."
When you are searching through these composers' music, the tempo of the piece will be written AFTER the title. The slow pieces have the following tempos: adagio, adagio sostenuto, andante, andante con moto, adagio malto, etc.. Look for those words.
