Use a muffin tin! Or when you put his food down, don't allow him to eat right away. Fuss him up.
We are currently fostering a golden puppy who is the worst eater we've ever seen. She literally fell on her food and almost choked herself on it. It was disgusting and unhealthy. We actually hand fed her for a couple of meals, out of her dish, even reaching into her mouth to slow her down. That helped a lot, but so did giving her lots of affection before mealtime even when her food was down on the floor. She now eats at a normal pace.
However, if that doesn't work a muffin tin will. Separate the food out in small portions into each cup. It will force her to slow down.

Well, I would say don't worry about it. Just like humans, dogs eat at different rates. But, I know that won't do it for you, so I will also say that if you think it's a neurological problem, just give him a pat on the back while he's eating so he feels more relaxed and not so anxious.
If you're still giving him soft puppy food, however, maybe it's time to switch to dry food.

Put the dry kibble in an empty coke bottle. Put the bottle & dog on a tile floor. Your dog will have fun working to get the kibble out & this will slow his eating down to about 10mins.

Yes, there are bowls designed to slow down dogs from gulping their food. JW Pet Skid Stop Slow Feed Pet Bowl has ridges built in that keep the dog from eating too fast.

There is also the Omega Paw Portion Pacer Ceramic Feeding Ball for Dogs that can be placed inside a regular bowl along with the food to help prevent food gulping.

Put a rubber ball in the bowl with the food, when he eats. One other thing that you can do to slow him down is get him a Kong and let him work for his food. Also handfeed him part of his food with training.

I'm rather old school (that happens when you are 70), and I will just place a big ole rock in the center of the food dish.

Two solutions:
1) don't get pups from puppy mills
2) get the bowl another has mentioned earlier in the answers.
ADD: um that should tell you something about your breeder
Source(s): Wife owns a petsitting Co. She's got a client with two puppy mill Corgis that have that problem, and they both have the bowls, and they work.
