I want to make one important point. MOST new head coaches are busts if you just consider their win-lost record. You can be an assistant NBA coach or a college coach... Your chances of success are low. We like to stereotype college coaches because "they can control college students" while NBA players are grown men and don't want to listen to a taskmaster. In reality, both categories have a low success rate.
For every Pitino, Calipari, and Floyd... there's a Randy Whittman, Dwane Casey, and Eric Musselman who were NBA assistants that weren't good head coaches.
What differentiates a bad and good head coach? Some of it is coaching ability but personnel is probably a bigger factor in the NBA. When Doc Rivers was head coach of Orlando, people complained he didn't have much variety in his playbook. When he started out in Boston, his team sucked. Now he's a great coach... What happened? He got Garnett, Pierce, Allen, and Rondo.
Do I think Tom Izzo can be a good head coach in the NBA? Sure... He seems to be very down-to-earth, knows how to motivate players, and smart.
Is he a good fit for the Cavs? Questionable. Izzo is known to make his team tough and defensive. Wasn't the Cavs problems on the offensive end?
Will he leave MSU? If enough money is offered and Lebron's staying. He's done all he can at MSU. If he wants a new challenge, this could be it. But it will be very difficult to get him to coach the Cavs without assurances that Lebron will return to Cleveland.

Well though the majority of college coaches are not successful in the NBA, I like Tom Izzo. He seems like he could be another Greg Popovich to me (Pops coached in college before the NBA and look how he turned out) somebody who is tough, disciplined and makes his players earn every win.
As for taking the job, I doubt he will, Michigan State is just too sweet of a spot to leave.

This is typical when the the owner has way too much control. So many NBA coaches and you go with Izzo. Not impressive
