"Breaking away" the movie - Gear and cadence use?

In the movie"Breaking away", Dave drafted behind an 18 wheeler up to 60 mph and breaking away as the trucker gets pulled over for speeding. Power aside, I wonder what gear/cadence one need to use to get the wheels go that fast.

On a 700cX25 rear tyre, a chain-wheel of 70 teeth, a rear sprocket of 11, will require a cadence of 121 to produce a speed of 60.4 MPH.

See the attached link for a calculator to solve any wheel size / gearing /cadence speed for you.

Sadly, this is one of the flaws of the movie.

Bicycles of the day were typically equipped with a 52 or 53 tooth chain ring and 13 to 14 tooth small cog. If Dave pulled a cadence of 120 rpm with a 53/13 high gear, he would have spun out at 38 miles per hour.

    Otherwise a great movie.

By the way, I have ridden a number of times in and around Bloomington. Beautiful riding country.
