Bettas are tropical fish and like the water warm, but not hot. If you have a tank small enough to move around, then it will certainly heat up quite quickly since it's so tiny. Aside from boiling the fish, even a small amount of direct sunlight can grow lots of algae. It's not the betta that can't be in sunlight - they live in sunlight in the wild - it's the tank that can't be in sunlight. Just not a good idea for the fish. The fish would prefer a shaded spot where you leave it alone.

It should be fine in front of the window just as long as you keep an eye on it. Beta fish are tropical so they do not like cold water at all. They normally should be kept at room temperature and they will be fine. Another thing that you should look out for by keeping it by a window is if your windows are drafty and leak cold air. This could effect the bowl in a way that would lower the temperature. If the water temperature becomes lower that 65 degrees then move it somewhere else. I hope this helps!

convinced, a beta fish can bounce out of its bowl. it really is sensible to position a canopy with holes over the bowl so as that the fish can no longer bounce out of the bowl. in case you do not have a lid be sure that the water isn't filled top to the properly of the bowl via the indisputable fact that makes it a lot less confusing for the fish to leap out of the bowl. There are some plastic beta fish bowls that comprise a canopy attatched to the container with holes for air.

I wouldn't recommend it. Besides having to watch the temperature more closely, you'll also need to scrub the tank more often. Sunlight encourages algae growth. The first poster is mistaken. Bettas need warm water (in the 78-82 degree range), definitely NOT cold water.

The sun itself won't directly harm the fish, but it tends to overheat the water. So if you have the betta tank in a place that gets direct sun, you should carefully monitor the water temperature (with a thermometer) during daylight hours.

Fluctuations would stress the betta out.

They are tropical so they do not do well in cold water but they can not tolerate too warm waters. Breeding them at 30 degrees is all that is recommended as short term period. Otherwise 22-26 steady degrees will be fine.

In direct sunlight the tank could overheat and the water could get too hot. Betas need colder water, not frigid, but slightly cold. Also, dark colors absorb more energy from the sun (then lighter colors) and turn into heat. Your fish itself could get too hot.

if in direct sunlight you must keep a close eye on the temperature

Don't place it by the window....temperature could rise too much....algae growing levels will go sky high!
