What deficiency comes from not eating red meat?

Lately I've been dieting and developed a huge craving for protein. I usually don't eat much meat, just some chicken or fish a couple times a week or so. But suddenly I developed a huge craving for protein that chicken wouldn't satisfy. So, for the first time in 3-4 years, I bought a steak and made an entire meal out of it. I usually only eat beef every few months, and then just a little in take out, so I'm curious what nutrients would make me crave it so.

I exercise regularly, walk at least a mile per day, and had my karate class just before I went shopping last night.

You're probably craving glutamine (glutamic acid). It's the reason savory things taste savory (which is why you craved steak) and it comes in supplement form and with certain protein shakes.

Protein is a necessary part of a person's diet and red meat, chicken and fish are major sources of protein. It builds muscle and assists with energy. Especially after a long workout, your body will crave/need protein to replenish what you lost through the exercise. Try protein bars or a tablespoon of peanut butter to replenish these if chicken and fish aren't doing enough for you. Your body is probably craving protein because it's tired from the work out.

Vitamin B12 deficiency is also a common issue with vegetarians and vegans (non red-meat eaters in general) and can potentially have devestating side effects. Supplements can come in yeasts, veggie burger mixes, certain breakfast cereals and soy milk.

Your craving is more than likely just what you said-the protein your taking in isn't satisfying your body's need for it. Before a workout, I sometimes have a banana and a tablespoon of peanut butter to keep my energy sources up.. afterwards or later in the day a protein bar can help you after youve worked out and your body is tired. That, in addition to your regular chicken and fish meals should help you.

    good luck, hth!

really your craving the saturated fats, iron comes from oats as well, a serving of non- packaged oatmeal quacker oats has 90% iron and 150 calories all from complex carbs 2 grams of fat, and 0.5 grams saturated. compared to 4 oz. of steak which has like 270 calories, 20 - 25 grams of fat and 20- 25 grams of fat and 50% iron, try to switch to egg whites ( 1 egg medium egg white 16 calories 3.3 grams of protein), light tuna ( a can is 100 calories 20 grams protein, 250 mg of omega- 3), chicken breast ( 1 oz. is 35 calories 7- 7.5 grams of protein), and salmon ( 198 grams has 13 grams fat 39 grams protein) ( which has a good portion of fat , but no where as much as steak and its all really good for you) and has about the minerals of eating 12-13 egg yolks, and has 600% daily less cholestrol than 12 egg yolks ) for those people who say egg yolks are magic. salmon has 40% cholestrol for all that, and also has 0.5 grams to 2 grams of omega 3 depending on brand.

You could get anaemia, an iron deficiency, but that's only if you eat no dark green vegetables and no other sources of iron. I'm a vegetarian and I'm fine. Eggs are high in protien if you are craving it!
