wep vs wpa for wireless network protection?
i currently have wep, and i know it's not as safe as wpa but i was just wondering what information can be accessed by a "hacker" if they were able to break the wep? obviously they will be able to use my internet connection, but can they see what websites i go to and obtain information i may tpye into the website? what are the chances of your home connection being hacked? also, does it cost money to have wpa?

WPA2 has a higher encryption algorithm and I suggest that you do update your network configuration setup to WPA2 via your router, if your router has this possibility. Once a hacker breaks into your connection, he/she will have access to anything not protected by passwords or encryption. And yes, they could see your history, real time view of what websites you're viewing, your account IDs, passwords, banking history and account numbers, etc. Now, chances that your home connection will be hacked are minimal, mostly because professional hackers use their knowledge to hack into larger systems. However, home connections (especially those not too secured) would be the target for amateur hackers. Finally, if your router allows WPA or WPA2, there is no costs required to change your connection to WPA/WPA2.

I remember reading a article about the huge advantages of WPA encryptions in 2006, and stuck with them ever since. I installed Ubuntu Linux distro on my buddy's laptop, and the only way we could connect online at her house was to switch over to WEP. (That distro couldn't use WPA yet) After a few weeks, she started complaining about connection speed. Got her a distro that uses WPA, and suddenly, everything is back to normal, and has been normal for the past few months. My guess was somebody managed to piggyback on her connection.

if they were able to crack your wep/wpa and connect to your network your pretty much done.
1. They can scan your systems on the network for vulns to attack and steal data
2. They can intercept your internet "Packets" so that they can capture your logins, and other detials you submit online, so alot of damage can be done

That depends on weather you have a network set up. But you should switch to WPA2 encryption, it is much stronger.
