Taxes for Minors???????????????

I'm only 17 and I'm a waiter.. I got my second paycheck,

and I noticed it was really low when I realized that full taxes

were being taken out. Fed Income, Fed Medicare, fed social,

and Baltimore city...

Now I know that social and Medicare always come out.. but am

I supposed to be taxed on all that other stuff... I mean they took a lot.

Will I get that all back when I file my taxes?

This is normal. Yes you will get them back when you file your taxes. I get almost $100 taken off my paycheck.

Yes, if you earn enough money, your employer will withhold taxes from you. The fact that you're 17 has nothing to do with it. Withholding is based on your income and on what you put on your W-4, not on your age.

The other answers that say you'll get it "all" back may be incorrect. What you get back at the end of the year depends on how much you've earned during the year. You'll most likely get most or all of it back, though, if you're only working part time.

Yes, you are subject to all of those taxes. The only tax that minors do not pay is the tax on buying alcohol, and that is only because minors are not allowed to buy alcohol. All of the taxes that you mention do exist for minors, and some of them are higher for minors than for adults. It is possible that you will get back some of the tax for other reasons, but not because of being a minor.

Being a minor doesn't excuse you from tax. If you are a dependent (which at 17 you probably are) and make overr $5700 for the year, you won't get all of the income tax back.

you cannot avoid the FICA taxes and probably your state disability, and it sounds like you have a local tax that is mandatory as well

at 17 if you are no anticipating earning $5700(your standard deduction if you are a dependent) you can file exempt on your W-4 and no income taxes will be withheld

only the income taxes can be refunded to you when you file

Being that your a minor, if and when you file taxes you will get all state and federal and city back. Medicare and soc.sec always get taken and you rarely get those back.
