First you have to make the equation look like mx+b=y making the equation 3y=1-5x.
(**** remember that m= slope)
Then you have to divide the 3 beside the y on both sides to get the y by itself making the equation y=(1-5x)/3 or y=1/3 -(5x)/3
The equation of a line is given by y-y1=m(x-x1). In this case y1 = -4 and x1 = 0
The equation will look like y-(-4) = -5/3(x-0) .... i used y= -5/3x+1/3 ( i rearranged the equation to look more like the equation of a line)
then y+4 = -5/3x+0 ( i distributed)
then y+4= -5/3x ( i took off the +0)
then y= -5/3x-4 ( i subtracted 4 from each side)
the slope will be -5/3
(**** remember that m= slope)
to check your answer you can put in y=1/3 -(5x)/3 and y= -5/3x-4 into your graphing calculator. You will see that the two lines are parallel and not perpendicular and that y= -5/3x-4 passes through (0,-4). If you go to calculate and then value and enter 0 you will find that the line passes through this point for sure.
phew... this took me awhile to figure out but I got it! hope this helps!!!
