Why is everyone so worried about solar storms today?

Seriously; every other question in 'Astronomy and Space' seems to be about "solar storms", with this odd assumption that they're going to do massive damage to mankind and that one is inevitable. This big of a spike and this consistency of misunderstanding defies coincidence. Is History channel running an 'end of the world' marathon or something? I'm honestly wondering what has everyone so stirred up about the subject.

My friends at Space.com posted a story about solar storms this morning which was picked up by Yahoo.com and run on their home page. If anyone actually reads the story, they will learn that no solar storm is currently taking place, nor will one take place in the next few years. Too bad nobody on Yahoo!Answers can read ordinary English...

you're questioning some Coronal Mass Ejection, a CME. whilst they are lots extra established for the duration of classes of "image voltaic maximum," the prospect of one coming straight away at Earth interior reason slender. The Earth only occupies an exceedingly small volume. Any CME that would not come straight away in the direction of us is thoroughly hazard loose, different than interfering with radio communique somewhat. The solar is amazingly great, and there is no thank you to foretell while or the place a CME is going to erupt, so regardless of "expert" is telling you that the lighting fixtures furnishings are going to bypass out is blowing smoke up your a**. that's a organic occurrence - it somewhat is occurred 1000's of situations I undergo in recommendations 11 years in the past while so-referred to as professionals have been warning on the subject of the cave in of civilization as a results of "Millenium computer virus," that became going to crash each and every computer in the international - it did not take place. There are human beings accessible incomes funds, a good number of money, through asserting that the international is approximately to end. It has not something to do with the Mayan calendar, the black hollow on the galactic center, or something. it somewhat is only the organic cycle of the solar doing what it somewhat is been doing for billions of years.

Because there are still people out there foolish enough to believe that our atmosphere is being destroyed, via global warming. I guess people forgot that the volcano in Iceland output more Carbon than we have over a span of a few years.

They're the ones who actually believe the 2012 predictions. Solar storms are apparently supposed to be able to destroy entire worlds... huh... who knew....

It's a big deal cause global warming destroys the atmosphere, which protects us from the sun's radiation. Solar storms produce enough radiation that if our atmosphere were highly damaged, which it's becoming, then all life on earth will die of radiation poisoning
