In agriculture, a Commercial crop(cash crop) is a crop which is grown for profit.
The term is used to differentiate from subsistence crops, which are those fed to the producer's own livestock or grown as food for the producer's family. In earlier times cash crops were usually only a small (but vital) part of a farm's total yield, while today, especially in the developed countries, almost all crops are mainly grown for cash. In non-developed nations, cash crops are usually crops which attract demand in more developed nations, and hence have some export value.
In many tropical and subtropical areas, jute, coffee, cocoa, sugar cane, bananas, oranges and cotton are common cash crops.
In cooler areas, grain crops, oil-yielding crops and some vegetables predominate;
an example of this is the United States, where corn, wheat, soybean are the predominant cash crops.
Tobacco has historically been a cash crop, though with increased pressures from anti-tobacco activists, it has declined in popularity[Really? citation needed]; the largest profiters from tobacco today tend to be governments, which in many places add taxes that more than double the cost of tobacco products. Coca, poppies and cannabis are other popular black-market cash crops, the prevalence of which varies. In the United States cannabis is considered by some to be the most valuable cash crop.[1]

"Commercial crops are crops which are produced mainly with the view of earning money." Most books give this answer, although it should be noted that all farmers grow crops because they need to earn money and that is the only trade they know! No farmer would decide to grow crops if they found a genie who would just give them untold riches.
To answer your question, commercial crops are crops which have a high demand among buyers not because of the nutritional benefits of the crop, but for other various reasons. To the farmers, these crops mean a higher profit because of the greater demand. Thus they are called commercial crops. An example would be tobacco. Tobacco has no dietary use and it is only because people are addicted to it that there is such a high demand.

Commercial crops are the crops meant for sale, crops intended for widespread distribution to wholesalers or retail outlets (e.g. supermarkets). Commonly commercial crops like wheat, maize, tea, coffee, sugarcane, cashew, rubber, banana, cotton are harvested in many parts of the world. Commercial crops does not include crops grown for household consumption (e.g. backyard garden or from a vegetable garden or a few fruit trees.) Hope it helps :) :)

The old guy is quoting from a Walt Whitman poem in which he is talking about pioneers and the fact that any time when growth comes (westward expansion) or or hard work is needed to be done it's a certain breed of people who answer the call. Hence the need for sharp edged axes! Levi's probably want people to relate to their jeans as tough, dependable able to help you get the job done.

I like those commercials! They're kinda moving and inspiring in a way. I think the guy talking was some old speech from the time period of the pioneers. Not sure though.
