I coach Water Polo, but the pool will not allow me to use a whistle - alternatives?

Yes, I hate my pool, but it's a small town, so options are limited. I've tried negotiating to use a different pitch, but the city is not willing to have their lifeguards standardize on a whistle pitch (even if I buy them!). The rule is "only lifeguards can use whistles". Yes, I hate my pool, but I've said that already. Does anyone have ideas on alternatives that would be viable in a pool environment, for Water Polo, but reasonably cost effective?

Thats a tough one because polo requires paying attention to whistles. I can whistle really loud using my fingers but it gets exhausting and gives me a headache but its one option.

For scrimmages you have to have a whistle so you could only scrimmage when no one else is in the pool. Also, you could practice game stuff on the land and use a whistle there (not a bad idea!)

Otherwise you're stuck with using the old flag method...its how polo used to be played. Refs had a pole w a white flag on one end and a dark flag on the other. They would whistle, you'd look at the flag and that's how you knew whose ball it is. The rules have changed so now refs just use their hands.

However, if you just used the flag for visual means the players would learn to look and respond to the flag. Not perfect but it would work.

One other thing...an air horn. They would really hate that!

    Good luck!

The flags seem like a viable option. If you don't mind me asking. Where is this town? A whistle is a water polo coach's best friend. As a water polo coach myself, I wish you good luck.

Air horn or some sort of megaphone to use words or something. I have to agree that only the lifeguards should be using whistles at s guarded area.

    Taboo buzzer!

But seriously, any sort of noisemaker that has a loud enough "whistle-like" quality sound would probably be your best bet.

Bicycle horn should do the trick
