Will bread stay fresher/last longer in the fridge?

Lousy bread like Wonder Bread. Or is Wonder Bread like Twinkies, and can't go bad (get moldy)?

Update:

Thanks to all for the great advice! I couldn't possibly choose a best answer, so will be leaving it up to the voters. Thanks again!! : )

Jan has the correct answer, your bread will go stale in the refrigerator, store it in the freezer if you must.It speeds up the chemical break down of the cellular structure.

Yes, it will last longer, but the bread has a tendency to get harder, stiffer and more compact which I dislike. A better thing to do is:

1). Cut the loaf in half and freeze half of it. Take it out and let it thaw a few hours and it will be fresher than if you kept it in the refrigerator section.

2). Buy smaller loaves of bread and use it quicker.

3). Keep the plastic clasp on the bread, out of direct sunlight or humidity.

The reason why bread goes moldy so quickly these days is that the manufactuerer's have stopped using Potassium Sorbate, which inhibits mold growth...due to the strong shouting and screaming hysteria by our organic friends.

I don't know what it is, but there's something about keeping bread in the fridge that makes it get a stale taste to it--whether or not it's actually stale, I'm not sure, but we keep our bread on the counter. If it cannot be used quickly enough, we freeze it. I've discovered freezing the bread not only keeps it fresher longer, but it makes some breads moister.

Putting the bread into the fridge will make it dry. I like to put my day-old bread into the freezer and then take out what I need to use for what I am preparing. It doesn't dry out in the freezer.

Bread will actually spoil faster in the refrigerator then it will on the cupboard because of moisture in the refrigerator. I keep mine in the freezer until I use it. It keeps much better and it doesn't take long at all to thaw a slice or two in the microwave when I need it.
