Do you like being hyphenated?

The U.S. government categorizes everyone into hyphens; i.e. African-American, Hispanic-American, Native-American, etc etc ad nausea...When will the U.S. recognize it's own people as just being "American?"

Update:

Did anyone find the option of "American" on the census form? No...If you wish to be called just an American of government forms, you have to write it in under "Other."

Didn't the habit start many decades ago, when the 'African-American's' and the Hispanic-American's, Native-American's wanted definition to their cultures? These races wanted to be differentiated from the white new settlers of America. There shouldn't be any segregation between races these days, it's too old fashioned and cliche. We're a rainbow world now and governments should keep up with this. You should be called on the country you live in or the passport you use when travelling.

It does recognize its people as simply being American. The racial/ethnic terms you have listed above are ways of further classifying the people according to where their ancestors came from.

    Black + White = Drama + Brain = Madness

Source(s): the black race is actually the dead branch of the human race, if it wasn't for the slave trade, it wouldn't be harder for us to boost all of our economies.

I was coming here to say yes, as that sounded rather fun, but now I read your question and I'm thinking no. I'm black, damnit.
