Which pitcher was better? Roger Clemens or Christy Mathewson?

Christy Mathewson single handedly won the 1905 World Series. He pitched 3 complete game shutouts, and it was probably the greatest individual world series performance of all time.

With that said, i'll still take Clemens. Most feared pitcher of the last 50 years.

I want to say Christy Mathewson, but if this is being based on statistics alone then it's a slight advantage to Clemens. Using ERA+ that accounts for era and ballpark factors, Mathewson is 136, Clemens 143.

But by all other measures of human beings Mathewson is so far above Clemens it's not funny. Mathewson was a true gentleman renowned for his honesty whose career was cut short because he chose (CHOSE!) to go fight for his country in the trenches of World War 1. Mathewson was gassed which eventually led to his early death at 45. Clemens on the other hand is a lying slimebag routinely reviled by teammates and foes alike. And he cheated on his wife with a teenager.

And for those who cite "Clemens won more Cy Youngs" please don't be so stupid. Mathewson pitched 50 years before the award was invented. Heck, he pitched at the same time as Cy Young! And playoff games...In four of the first five years of Matty's career there were no playoffs and in the other years only 1/8 teams made the playoffs; for most of Clemens career 4/14 teams made the playoffs - so of course he appeared in more games.

I am actually good friends with Christy Mathewson. But I think that Roger Clemens is technically better. Roger Clemens has better stats, but Christy didn't take steroids. Christy is more respected than Roger Clemens though.

As a pitcher slight advantage to Clemens. As a credit to the game slight advantage Christy. As a credit to human race lol. Clemens as stated a scum bag having crashed from his faked Daddy of year I'm clean. Christy goes in Ted Williams class as one of great Americans that also played baseball.

Of this checklist, i'd ought to bypass with Warren Spahn. it somewhat is on no account Nolan Ryan, between the main overvalued pitchers of all time, inspite of what Don Antonio and a few others think of. apparently, there are 4 non-HOF pitchers in this checklist-Glavine, Johnson, Maddux and Clemens. finding on the electorate, Roger Clemens would grow to be the only member of the 300 win club to not be enshrined in Cooperstown.

That's a Tough call, but I'd give it to Clemens. He was consistently good- over a longer Career.
