a filter is a good idea, but not really nessecary.

you will definitley need a heater, it will help regulate the temperature at night. the temperature at night can drop enough to kill the fish!

plants are a goood idea. the best is java moss/ferns

    you need betta water conditioner,

most bettas live for bloodworms, flake food will make the tank dirty and they probably wont eat it anyways. ;D

an uhmm.. a snail :D just make sure the betta doesnt get bored and start picking on the snail.

As a betta owner i think its good your asking but please research before next time. Proper betta care:

    Tank:

    5 gallons atleast

    Heated (24-28 degrees)

    Filtered (keep current low)

    Food:

    betta flakes

    blood worm

    daphina

    brine shrimp

    mosquito larve

    Cleaning:

no filter clean every 3 days 15%

    filter every week 15%

stand water for 24 hours in the same room (if you can put a spare heater in it)

treat standing water with chemical remover and bacteria

    siphon gravel through

    Hope this helps =)

tip put a mirror to the tank so he flares at it, its good exercise and keeps them healthy

You really don't need a heater for a beta, my mom has two of them, both in just plain fish bowls. They don't need to be in warm water.

Clean your tank by the way.

You don't have to wait. If you feed him, he'll like you. If you have another one in a different tank put them together. NOT IN THE SAME TANK!!!!!!!!!! Just so they can like, visit each other. My mom does that and they seem happy.

If you get water conditioners bettas are hardy fish so he will be fine, and it will take about a week to cycle a small tank like that. He will love lots of plants, and a snail to clean up his mess.
