Puppy Food for My New Mix Breed Puppy.?

Okay, I'm getting a puppy today around 3pm-4pm. Here it is currently 11:33am. (Why I mentioned all of this, I don't know. I guess I'm excited, haha.)

The puppy is Jack Russel, Chow, Beagle, and some other breed (large). She's not sure if it's Pit Bull or Great Dane. Her dog ran away for like 2 weeks and came back pregnant so she's only guessing based on the dogs in her area.

She has her dog and puppies on Ol' Roy. I KNOW this food is horrible. So I am going to start transitioning from Ol' Roy to Canidae (kind for puppies).

She said to put the puppies on wet dog food and formula. The puppies are six weeks old. Shouldn't they be on wet food alone right now and transitioning to dry? Aren't they a little past the formula age? Or do I transition mine off of formula at 7 weeks?

Totally confused. I was just going to buy a small canister of puppy formula and transition off of it (since she may be on formula now and I wouldn't want to upset her system) while mixing it with wet dog food (which was originally dry but soaked in warm water for 30 minutes). Or I was just going to make her (my puppy) the wet puppy food.

Please help.

Update:

First answerer:

-She has the puppies on wet food and formula.

- She has not transitioned them to dry yet, I am doing that for mine. (She should be fully on dry at 8 weeks.)

For second answerer:

-I know what transitioning means. That's why I said transition, not switch.

-If you read the details, you would have seen that the puppy is not solely one breed. Therefore I can not base this on breed. I was going to feed the amount based on her weight. I wouldn't let her overeat. I'm not going to just leave food out all day or keep filling her bowl when she's done.

Update 2:

Third Answerer: I already said I was using Canidae. I wasn't asking about what food to buy.

I swear 80% of answerers never read the entire thing.... Some only read the question and then answer.... Ugh..

Update 3:

Is Canidae really not Meat based???? I thought it was (haven't been to a pet store in a reaaaaallly long time.

Wow, that's a lot of information lol

First off, if the puppies are ready to take home then they shouldn't be on formula. There is no reason for them to be on any formula in the first place unless the mother didn't produce milk or the puppies weren't getting sufficient nutrients. When you bring your puppy home it doesn't really matter the kind of food you give her meaning since she is mixed she doesn't need any special kind, however...if she has a hard time eating dry food you can moisten it with warm water and if that doesn't help then you could switch to wet food and mix it with the dry that way she will get used to eating the solid food. However, make sure that if you get canned/wet food that it's not too rich b/c it could either upset her stomach or give her diarrhea and you don't want either of that.

I know you said that you were going to feed her Canidae specifically, and that's up to you, but I'm just giving you my opninion.I don't know how you plan on raising the puppy, like inside/outside, stuff like that, but in my opinion I think it's best to feed all dogs food that is meat based. Sometimes it is very hard to find that though, so it's understandable that most people don't. I live on a ranch and currently have 4 dogs-2 beagles, a terrier, and a great pyrenees, and they all eat the same dog food. It is a 29% protein dog food that is completely meat based. I can't think of the brand right now, but it's not in pet stores or walmart or TSC. You have to buy it directly from people who get it from the company. It's sold kind of like Mary Kay but dog food lol If you go to the other stores look on the ingredient list and if the first ingredient is some sort of corn meal or anything else but a meat product, it is NOT meat based. I go through about a 50lb bag a week with all of the dogs and if I bring something else home other than meat based they won't touch it....the chickens will eat it...because if it's not meat based then it's corned based and that's what chickens eat lol I also go through that much because the dogs are given an unlimited amount since they are ranch dogs and need more food than lap dogs who do nothing all day. They eat how much they want when they want and they're just fine that way. They are vet checked when the vet comes out to check all the other animals and they are not over-weight or over-fed, so don't comment about that thinking you know my dogs and what's best for them. The oldest dog is 17 and has never been sick a day in his life. Like I said I'm just giving you my opinion and hopefully it helps your decision.

So, I hope this helps...it is a lot of my opinion but it's always nice to see what others are thinking. Other than the food, I would definately get her vet checked and make sure that everything is ok with her and there isn't a medial need for her to be on a special diet.

Good luck and hopefully you've picked out a cute name for her!

You CAN feed the puppies formula, but you have to buy a weaning formula or it won't be providing adequate nutrition. If the puppies have transitioned to wet or dry food keep them on that. You can either dampen the dry food to make it easier to eat or mix the wet with the dry. Dry food is best for dogs because it has the most nutrition per amount.

At this age I would not recommend formula unless the puppy is having difficult eating because of size etc. The dry food will be better for the puppy since she has all of her teeth.

Ok, that's good. If the puppy is eating wet food maybe you could put a few kibbles in with the wet food.

You will want to buy a small bag of the food the "breeder" is feeding. Even though it's not good food, dogs need to have their food changed over gradually. For the first day you have puppy home, feed him 3/4 of the old food and about 1/4 of the new stuff mixed together. Do that for about 3-4 days. Then mix it half and half for another 3-4 days, then feed 1/4 of the old food and 3/4 of the new food for a few days. After that you should be able to feed just the new food with no problem or upset to the puppy's tummy.

Use the feeding guide on the side or back of the dog food bag to determine how much to feed your puppy, based on his weight.

Some foods I would recommend would be: Orijen, Acana, Wellness, Taste of the Wild, Innova EVO, Blue Buffalo.

    Congratulations on your pup!

Your pup will be suddenly going through a lot of changes in everything. Food is one thing to keep the same for a couple days.

It's always better to transition to different foods slowly. So start with what the other owner is doing, then start changing slowly. Be sure to ask for amounts, so that doesn't suddenly change either.

EDIT: Sorry - it didn't save this part for some reason... then I lost my Internet connection. :(

Like you, I like dry food for any age dog for at least one meal per day for helping with cleaning their teeth (in addition to cleaning now and then with a gauze pad).

My own preference is Science Diet, but there are others that are not as pricey.

Again, have fun, and good luck with your new puppy! :)

Start feeding it what they are feeding it, slowly mix in the food you want to feed it then eventually in about a month or so have it being fed toatlly what you want it to eat. Remember***** only feed puppies in meals... look up on google how much that breed should eat at a time otherwise it will eat until it explodes. Puppies do not have a complete sence of hungry and full yet.

  • I would stay with the name brands (not Pedigree)
