What can mall cops do legally?

Yes they can place a person in handcuffs, yes they can detain someone, they can use what force is necessary to break up a fight.

Many mall security officers are actually police officers working a part time job, some malls send their officers to the police academy so they are certified police officers on mall property. All security officers in your state are state certified, so they know the laws very well.

And it seems you are more upset about this incident than your friends are.

they're allowed to kick you out, break up fights by shoving people out of the way to prevent any other fights from happening or injuring mall goers. they are allowed to detain and handcuff you and put you in a little jail thing until cops come to get you. they can do just about everything a cop does except carry weapons except their baton.

right here in WA that's attack third that's an identical value as assaulting a police officer. in fact in case you attack absolutely everyone in authority you would be charged with attack third - a style C legal.
