How long will a splinter under the nail hurt?

This morning I got a wood splinter under my fingernail. I got the tip out but the rest I could not extract. All day it has been throbbing. Will it eventually work its way out as the nail grows?

Hello. I am a Neurosurgeon, I can help you... You need to remove it as soon as possible. The longer you wait = the more infected your nail will get. It will hurt until you remove it. If it's really deep into the nail where you can't remove it yourself, go see a doctor. Otherwise, remove it with a pair of tweezers. First, numb the area and cut off blood circulation for a second or 2.

One time I got a wood splinter under my nail too. If you push on your nail under the splinter, it should start to move up so then you can pull it out one there is a little bit of it sticking out. This might take a couple of days to do this.

I had one once. I poured some peroxide on it and it bubbled and drew the splinter out enough to where I could reach it with my tweezers. You may have to pour it on several times to do this, this is good because it disinfects it. Also soaking the area in warm water makes it easier, so go take a long bath and let your fingers get all wrinkled and then let them dry good and then do the peroxide thing and it should come out.

Pretty much forever. If you want it to stop hurting you will have to amputate your finger.
