Need help with NYSSMA List?

My home state music list is PUBLIC but specifically references NYSSMA as an extended approved source. Before I submit a request to add a solo piece, I'd like to know how I can get a look at the NYSSMA list. My son's teacher isn't from New York and would prefer not to pay the $50+ to buy a list that's only needed once or twice a decade.

Update:

I'm wondering if my teacher should petition the state to make the list available. It was their decision, after all, their decision to extend the repertoire in this manner. Unfortunate that they didn't think to provide copies in an approved manner...c'est la vie.

Thanks for your kind offer. I'll ask his teacher as she remains th grand cello pooh-bah.

I am a NYSSMA judge, and a music teacher in NY state since 1973. You cannot buy the NYSSMA Manual unless you are a NYSSMA member, or member of a state that has adopted the NY Manual - which most of the time means a certified, degreed music teacher. I know that many other states use our manual, instead of developing their own, which is fine - why reinvent the wheel? So - you can only get a look at the list from someone who owns one in your state. The NYSSMA Manual is not online, not digital anywhere, and is proprietary to members/authorized purchasers. This is because we as teachers are responsible for the literature that is specifically and appropriately selected for each student to prepare.

The NYSSMA Manual is revised every 5 years, not once a decade. I should know - I am on the repertoire selection committee.

If you tell me the work you are interested in, and of course the instrument, I will do you the courtesy of looking it up for you - my Manual is always here right on my desk. I will not, however, as have often been asked on this list, send something like "all the viola solos in the NYSSMA Manual". But checking on one work? Sure - glad to help.

I think that NYSSMA has probably sat on this - that if they sell this to other states, it is with the understanding they those states do not make this public knowledge, or duplicate it in any way. Good luck to you son.
