I suggest you go, if you are planning to, but right now have some qualms. Just came from there, and enjoyed this latest visit.

That depends on your purpose of going there. There is plenty to see. Much to experience. Casual attire for hot humid weather. Bring umbrella and/or hat for sun or rain. Bring ATM card. Many ATM machines but expect to be charged by each one a small amount plus your own bank will charge you another amount.
Samal Island has many places to experience both along the beach or inland to the falls and hiking.
In and around Davao, try Jack's Ridge, Eden, Crocodile Park, Philippine Eagle, Mt Apo, Peoples Park, and for the malls, there is SM Mall in Ecoland, Gaisano Mall close to down town.
Marco Polo Hotel is best bet for a nice place to stay and dine.
