How do I make an iPod touch I found on the ground work?
I found a 32GB 3G iPod touch on the ground. By guessing the passcode so many times, I've disabled the iPod, and I've looked online for help, but I have to plug it into the same computer it's synced with to erase the passcode. I've put it into DFU mode, and tried to restore it, but it said there was a problem restoring it, probably because it's disabled and I don't have the passcode.
I've also found out about something called blackra1n which I've tried downloading, but there's a problem with the ASL.dll file, and it can't be found. I don't think I'd want to do that anyway, because you have to open blackra1n every time you charge it.
If there's any way I could get rid of the passcode, or somehow jailbreak this iPod, please let me know how, that would be really helpful.
I'm not willing to spend any money by the way, so going to a store to get it unlocked is out of the question. I'm doing it myself.

The store can't do anything anyway because it's not your iPod. They aren't going to help you crack a passcode that could allow you to steal someone's identity. It's useless to you so find its rightful owner and return it. Someday you'll be glad that you did and if you don't, well, there's karma, fate, payback, destiny, whatever.

Yeah, the problem with blackra1n is that it's a tethered jailbreak. Have you considered trying Comex's new untethered jailbreak, 'Spirit'? If jailbreaking does indeed transpire to solve your problem, then for help with this please see step 1 of this article: http://www.getmotivated.eu/?page_id=9. I'd be very interested to hear if this works with your scenario so, if you can find time, please let me know how you get on.
PS. Of course I'm assuming that all reasonable attempts to locate the original owner have failed and now you simply don't want to waste what I gather is a perfectly serviceable device. I imagine that going into an Apple shop would allow the stewards there to somehow obtain a serial number and find the original owner, if they've registered it, but if a) your conscience doesn't instruct you that it's your onus to expend your own time solving a stranger's problem, or b) you've already pursued this option and it hasn't worked, or c) you already know that for another reason that I wouldn't know, this option wouldn't work, then yes, hopefully my above suggestion will avoid the needless waste of a device that someone has perhaps already replaced.

There's general mapping info there now, but they're working on an article to appear there soon describing how to use an iPod Touch as a cross-country navigational aid when doing hill training in the UK in preparation for climbing Kilimanjaro.
