music nowadays sucks, because MANY young people music taste nowadays sucks?
and before I go any further, I just want to clarify that I'm born in 1982 (which makes me still of today's young/Gen Y generation,...not some typical 'old-gen-hates-new-gen' cliched story).
I know that this has been said over & over again that it's almost a cliche, but seriously, as a big music lover and a musician myself, I feel really really sad & angry for the current state of *MAINSTREAM* music nowadays (note: i am not saying ALL, just those big MAJOR hits that's played in radio & MTV nowadays), that everytime I turn on the radio or MTV or V channel nowadays, it's like I just want to destroy my radio & TV forever, because I can't stand how music nowadays just basically feels very 'dry', lack emotions, very shallow lyrics and theme, and the same boring **** repeated from artist to artist. this alone is already sad. but what makes me even sadder, is of how there are still MANY many people (particularly teens, I notice) that said of how this & this major artist have a TALENT, and a HUGE one!......uhh, no it's not. it's sadly just a "clever marketing & advertising strategy" coupled with being "commercial" & having all about pretty looks & body (and showing cleavage & boobs for female).
what happened to the great, very emotional, and actually INNOVATIVE music, and I'm talking about MAINSTREAM music, such as:
- Beatles : Eleanor Rigby (still damn genius song, IMO)
- Carpenters' heartfelt emotional songs & *meaningful* lyrics that you CAN actually relate, such as Yesterday Once More, Rainbow Connection, Leave Yesterday Behind
- Queen : Show Must Go On (I literally shiver everytime I hear this, even still now!)
and many many other good *MAINSTREAM* music??
- and in the rock realm itself, all those REAL-innovative (not the misinterpred "fake innovative") rock music such as Led Zeppelin's Kashmir, Guns N Roses' kick-*** ending in song November Rain, Deep Purple's Sweet Child in Time, Burn, etc
- even funky, soul music such as in the movie Sister Act (just watched it yesterday) were still DAMN GOOD compared to the crappy repetitive r&b and sh*tty blink-blink shallow hip-hop music nowadays! (that again, misplacedly labeled as "talented"! uggghh!)
instead, nowadays for the *MAINSTREAM* music played in radio and TV, and labeled as "talented, gorgeous" by these young teens, we got Lady Gaga feat Beyonce with mediocre, 'dry' music, then showing all their body and by repeating meaningless "e e e e e e e" phrases and lack heartfelt LYRICS! .....and don't even get me started on talking about Ke$$$$hhhhaa & Bieberrr!
I mean seriously,..as cliche & overly-repeated question this certainly is, but I'm there's a REAL POINT in people asking this question: what the hell is wrong with music nowadays? and where is it heading?
and thus my main question: is it *only* music nowadays that sucks,..or is it because today's MAINSTREAM young teens & people are part to blame, because there're still a LOT lot of them, fact of the matter, still like it, even label them as "talented" ???
and a BIG kudos will be added, if you can actually tell me, how to change this hopeless situation we're in?
thanks, and please forgive my frustration!
PS: again I'm not saying ALL music today sucks. it's the major, MAINSTREAM music that's currently "popular" and played over & over again in music & radio, that so many people nowadays sadly still think they're "talented", and that's WHY they're POPULAR/famous! ouch, big one!

That claim has been made by every generation for the past 50 years at least, and about every band you list as being an example of when music was still "good".

I'm still trying to find the question in here. Besides the point, I just turned 15 today and I only listen to that stuff when I am in my sister's car. The only band who I have the whole discography for is Led Zeppelin. I have a box set of Jimmi Hendrix's live and unrecorded/recorded music. I hate most of the rap other than Jay Z, and I am an avid fan of NWA. The only way you will not be upset is if you just shot damn mouth and quit giving a damn about things you can't change. This is what it is and everything is open to interpretation. See once all this stuff is gone, which I doubt will be soon, the music that is made, even if it is mildly decent, people will think it is genius and the best work since Van Halen. But seriously you wrote a long essay on this topic but there is not a single question in their, just a bunch of question marks in the wrong place.

"music nowadays just basically feels very 'dry', lack emotions, very shallow lyrics and theme, and the same boring **** repeated from artist to artist. "
Couldn't agree with you more.
I thought I didn't like music much, I mean, I like old school stuff (Queen, The Clash, Old School Weezer,The Smiths etc.), but it wasn't a "passion" of mine. And I didn't like current music no matter how hard I tried...
But, I found Japanese music and I love it; (for the most part) it has what I've been missing; The emotions, the though-provoking lyrics, the experimentation etc). And yeah, I know I'm going to get TD just because there are alot of people around here who get offended when you mention music from a different country, but it's true to me atleast and it's my opinion.
Mainstream music here: It's popular because it's "catchy" and it has themes that most people like, such as sex, sex and more sex. It's the thoughtful people who appreciate thoughtful lyrics, who avoid "MAINSTREAM" music crap.
How to change the situation:
EDUCATION: I think in regards to everything actually. If young people are more accepting of though-provoking ideas and literature, not that joke called "Young adult literature", they wouldn't be so accepting of such trashy lyrics. Additionally, if they become more knowledgeable about music, and GOOD MUSIC, alot of them would probably drop that current crap they listen to...
CREATE A MOVEMENT: Of course this is for those who are extremely passionate about this issue. Create a group on Facebook or something, create an actual, physical group of people. Start a club at a college campus, high school, etc. Start a non-profit!!!!!!! But I can definitely see the big music execs breathing down your throats and try to shut you down, definitely. Of course, public awareness campaigns (education) would be instrumental to achieve this goal through this idea...

I'm young and I completely understand what you mean. I hate some of the mainstream music that is played of course I like some like Lady GaGa (huge fan), some Ke$ha, Owl City. But I mostly listen to bands like The Beatles, David Bowie, Elton John, Metallica etc. But then I also like bands people have never heard of or don't like.

I've never been a fan of MAINSTREAM, it's always been that sappy sucky slop since the AM days played over and over and over again till you can't stand to hear it any more. In this era I consider the radio a quaint antique left over from the Stone age. Got net? Use it! In my opinion if you limit yourself to Mainstream only you deserve what you get.

I'm going to respond to the title of your post alone:
Bullshit. There is some great music going on right now. Even in mainstream culture which usually shits on the proper stuff and goes all goo-goo over crappy one-hit-wonders.

I am 22 and I pretty much agree with you I would rather listen to The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, and bands like that than anything that is out now

People still like all the good bands like the Beatles and everything, we just like to dance around to something really upbeat and fun every now and then like Ke$ha and stuff :)
