engine running hot or past middle mark?
I know i have a piece of s&%$ 99' grand am with the p.o.s 2.4 twin cam engine. We have flushed the cooling system, all fans are working. there are also no leaks.
so this is my story. when my car is stationary it likes to run a little hot in the middle of the 3/4 quarter of the temp gauge. when driving it goes back to normal from probably the air flow. one day i decided to rev. my engine to 2000rpm while parked and oddly it started to cool off.
why is this? is it cuz the oil or water pump is going bad? i just cant have a blown engine ya know. thanks =)

Ok heres whats going on, there is a blend door inside the ducting of your A/C vents which controls the hot/cold air depending on your settings, you are always going to get a little hot air when its set to cold, or a little cold air when its set to hot just because you cant completely shut the blend door for either the evaporator (A/C) or heather core (heat). Your heater core was actually acting as a radiator and removing the heat from your engine, that why you started to feel hot air through the vents. As a rule of thumb, when your car over heats, turn on the heat full blast as this will act to cool off the engine so you can drive to the nearest service station.
Although there is no way to diagnose this problem without being physcially there I can give you a pretty good idea what to look for. Let your car idle for a bit (keep an eye on the temp) and see if your fan goes on. If your fan doesnt then you found your problem, its either the fan relay or the fan motor itself. If your fan does indeed go on then you need to get your cooling system looked at. It is possible the thermostat is stuck closed but I would also venture to say that you may have a clog somewhere in your cooling system. Squeeze all the hoses and ensure you dont have any lumps in the liquid, look at your anti-freeze, does it look the normal color or does it seem murky? If you havent already I would highly suggest having your cooling system flushed. It is recomended that you do this every 2-3 years and most people it never crosses their mind. Make sure you find a place that actually flushes your system and not just drains it and refills it. I would highly recomend visiting the site below and typing in your zip code to find a shop that offers BG cooling system services, you will notice a night and day difference.

the 1st answer is right; you likely have a leaky heater center. however the interest isn't relaxing; certainly discern that it is going to take between 5-6 hours of labour, plus the cost of the heater center, coolant, and doubtless an a/c recharge (based upon the technique of the restore man or woman). interior the San Francisco Bay section, labour runs from $a hundred to one hundred sixty according to hour, with a bit of luck it is going to likely be below that the place you're. The carpet must be bumped off, washed out and spent time to air dry over a pair days. this might take further time, yet once you somewhat need to do away with the scent it fairly is the only thank you to do it perfect. The coolant has soaked into the sound insulation under the carpet and the only thank you to do away with it fairly is to do away with the carpet and sparkling the two it and the insulation. in any different case the coolant scent will proceed to be continuously and likewise ought to reason mould to enhance (that's a well being probability). discern a minimum of two further hours of labour a minimum of (must be extra) to do away with and reinstall the seats and centre console and carpet. i can't decide what the rpm undertaking is; somebody needs to test the pc gadget with a VAG scanner to work out what is going on with that. The overheating must be brought about by ability of the coolant working low? back, somebody will ought to seem into that to boot. wish this enables, a automobile nut.

my old saturn used to do this. on that it was the way the radiator was cooled. it wasnt open enough to let air pass freely. when driving air would get sucked up and cool it but when i was stopped, it had no natural way to cool the radiator so the fan would kick on. So in other words, is there any obstructions to the radiator? it may be similar problems. if you think the water pump is bad, find the weep hole and see if it has any water around it. if it doesnt it should be ok. but if still i doubt, take the belt loose from it and see if there is any freeplay in the shaft. if so, it may benefit to replace it.
