Do I only need a wireless adapter to connect my ps3 to the internet?

I have a wireless router that is downstairs, and I am upstairs. I would like to connect my ps3 to the internet without having a long cord. I know the ps3 has wifi, so can I just get away with buying a wireless adapter and then the signal being picked up from the downstairs router? If so, does this router go into the actual ps3, or a computer that is upstairs? If the computer, does it need to be on for me to be on the internet? (Sorry in advance for my lack of knowledge, never done this before and am just trying to get the facts straight)

Thanks to any helpful responses!

No, you dont because it has a wireless adapter inside so you dont need one, but if you want really fast connection get a ethenet cable for about £5-10 and that will do, ive had my playstation3 for 3years now and then internet on it has been fine :)
