Vegetarians - What is the best Vegetarian substitute for chicken?
If such a thing exists?
I've been vegetarian for over 2 years now but I have never come across a chicken substitute, only substitutes for minced beef, bacon etc.
Any links to product sales online or name of produce would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!
@Peter - ah, thank you my good friend, there are many reasons I do not eat chicken however, if a human being can be locked away and imprisoned for torturing another human, then my personal belief is that they should also be locked away for the torture of any animal. I MAY eat chicken one day if all chicken production was to become free range, but until then I shall be vegetarian as I do not agree with the shocking conditions many chickens live in as they are probably the most tortured animal on the face of the planet - 90% of mass production chickens having broken bones by the time they go to slaughter. I do however get my lost nutrition elsewhere - vegetarian diets contain more than enough protein and for vitamin B12 - I am able to take a vitamin tablet, your body stores this vitamin for 30 years at a time anyhow. Thank you however!
@Nancy - thank you very much for the great suggestion and also to the other person who suggest Quorn, I was unaware Quorn ofered a chicken sub.

When I was a child my family did not eat meat or animal by products.
We made spreads from garbanzo's ground up with pickles and other stuff
cheese was made from cashew nuts and pimentos
I made gluten steaks by taking flour and water making a thick paste and washing out every bit of white I could after it had set. I then broke it in pieces and made steaks out of it, you could do it in chunks, we boiled these in a liquid of onion, leak and many spices to flavor.
We had many dishes made from soy beans. Soy bean soufflé was the nastiest.
there should be a source of mock chicken in a health food store, but I do not know about in your country, I have only lived in the US and Canada.

There is this veggie Chicken sausage made from Whey, Sugar and Tofu that is practically better than the real thing- I swear I certawinly like it better, especially fried.
Most Vegetarians were once meat eaters and we sure miss the taste as well... Faux meat might be less heathy than fresh veggies, but it beats eating meat.

I am a vegetarian from buffalo, so I know the problem well. we simply make seitan (use garlic, onion or whatever seasoning you want when simmering it). then fry on medium high heat in oil til the outside is golden brown. remove from stove pour into a bowl with a mixture of frank's red hot and butter (vegan). toss until covered. if not vegan, use bleu cheese to dip in and enjoy. (no do not use ranch dressing, real buffalo wings use bleu cheese, as I said, I live there).

The sooner you can go all-green, the sooner you can achieve freedom from the psychological attachment that the taste of meat has on you. Meat substitutes only prolong this attachment and suppress the desire for flesh. In a moment of weakness, you easily shift back to meat eating. Besides meat subsitutes contain preservatives and unhealthy additions to mock the taste of chicken or beef or fish.

Morning Star "chicken" nuggets are the best! Also, Quorn is very nice and there's fake chicken burger patties at grocery stores as well.

"I have been assured by a very knowing American of my acquaintance in London, that a young healthy child well nursed is at a year old a most delicious, nourishing, and wholesome food, whether stewed, roasted, baked, or boiled; and I make no doubt that it will equally serve in a fricassee or a ragout."

Steam King Oyster Mushroom has almost the same texture as steamed chicken meat.

Have you ever given seitan a try? It's a good overall meat substitute.
As for the b-12 as you probably know eat plenty of leafy greens like spinach and broccoli.

If you are reffering to the taste, I personally love Quorn chicken dippers!
Mmmm!
Just thinking about them makes me hungry!
AND they taste exactly like chicken!
