Central units are more efficient than window units so per btu central units are cheaper.

But central units are usually 30 to 40 thousand btu's and are used to cool the entire house. If all you want to do is cool one room it is cheaper to run an inefficient 5 thousand btu window unit to cool the 1 room then run the efficient 36 thousand whole house unit.

The window units usually have eer around 10, outside units start at eer of 13. Also window units leak a lot of hot air inside because you have to open a window to use them and those little side flaps do not insulate very well at all.

Depends on where you live. I live in South Florida and live in a house with window units through the wall. Although each window unit or even two at the same time are probably cheaper than a central A/C unit, we have to run all four units all the time. Why? Because here, it is so hot and humid, that if you don't run the A/C, things get moldy really fast. The two we don't use much, the living room and the guest bedroom are set at 82°, but they run all the time. The other two, the family room and the master bedroom go full tilt 24/7.

If you live in a more temperate climate, then you can get away with turning window units off unless needed. I doubt you save that much though as central A/C units are a lot more efficient than they used to be.

yes a window air conditioner draws less amperage than central air...central air runs off a 220 line where as a window unit runs off a 120 volt line. I believe a window unit draws 10 amps for a single room a/c, not sure what the exact amperage is on a central unit...but it should be listed on the name plate of the unit.
