Can someone explain the dual hard drive on a Dell Inspiron 1440? Can I run programs from D:?

My computer is running Windows 7, and apparently I have two hard drives, one labeled OS C: and the other labeled Local Disk D:. My OS C is out of memory-why? I tried copying my program files over to D:, can I run programs from it? Is D supposed to be merely a storage device? Please help!!

Update:

if so, can I delete the program files in C after I've transferred them to D? Would that free up space?

You can't just copy your program files over to D. You have to uninstall the program from C and then reinstall it on D. Personally, I would keep your programs on C and just move all of your pictures, videos and other files over to D.

Sounds like you have 2 partitions on your harddrive. Your "programs", including your operating system (OS) are on "C:" and your data files are on "D:". You can't copy programs to D but you can add files to D...photos, documents, etc. So transfer some of those types of files from C to D to clear up some space on C.

If you need to add programs and don't have enough room even after clearing out C drive, you can add them to the D partition, but you will need to pay close attention during installation since most program installers default to the C partition. Just change the location to a folder on the D partition when you install a new program. It will run from the D partition just fine after installation.

Yes you can, it's just like an extension of your other drive.
