Alright "Desker than desk job." He's still in the Army, just not in a position of authority, and as long as he doesn't do something stupid he gets his pension when he transfers to the retired part.
I understand from a posting of another Y!A user that his perm rank may be two star instead of four, so that would be what he retires at.
