The Haunting of Hill House was a fantastic read. Very descriptive and spine-tingling.
If you are looking for something with more modern prose, go with Stephen King. I would recommend The Shining, IT, Misery, Cujo, or The Stand.
The Shining was probably the creepiest, but Misery was a psychological rollarcoaster. IT was just straight terrifying.
Hope this helped.

Every once in a while I like to pick up a good teen/young adult book. It's been a while but these were ones I read a while back and they were pretty good. Try A Great and Terrible Beauty series by Libba Bray. It doesn't have vampires but it does have mythical creatures. It's pretty good and I was reading them while I read the Twilight series and enjoyed them much more. Also try books by Sarah Dessen. She does young adult books. The characters usually have problems but they find a way to overcome and find something they looking for...ie like love. You can also read Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist. It did come out as a movie which I didn't see but the book is good. You can check out the websites for these authors they usually give you a list of other YA authors too. Or you can try the public library, that's where I found most of these books. Good Luck!!!

"Complete Stories & Poems" by Edgar Allan Poe - not all the stories are scary but I haven't read any that were boring or not worth reading
"The Annotated Dracula" by Bram Stoker - this is the book that unfortunately spawned tons of dreck like Twilight, but unlike Twilight it's actually quite good
"The Historian" by Elizabeth Kostovo - a modern day Dracula tale, more creepy than scary but also quite entertaining
Look around in a used bookstore for collections of horror tales, that way you can check out a lot of different stories & authors in one or two books. Or check one out of the library.

Stephen King's Shining was pretty good. I also liked The Tell Tale Heart by Poe and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Irving, but those are short stories. I suggest Stephen King or Dean Koontz for full novels.

Chain letter by Christopher Pike and also
Whisper of Death by the same author. Read that one at home alone and it freaked me out!

There’s a web site for books called the spooky stories I think? Here’s a link for the web site to click on:

You can also read a bunch of stories on the web site for free.
Hope that helps.
