Why are Pittsburgh Pirates in Central Division?

Instead of East Division?

What it not make more sense for them to be in that division?

    I've thought that too.

Contrary to what the first respondent says, the Pirates are not in the Central Division in order to even the divisions out - there are 6 teams in the Central and only 5 in the East and West, so the divisions are going to be uneven in either case.

But since the Pirates and Phillies are intrastate rivals, wouldn't it make sense to let them play each other as division opponents, just like the Giants/Dodgers and A's and Angels do? I believe this is the only example of two teams from the same state in the same league who aren't in the same division.

The Pirates were placed in the Central division to balance out the divisions and to be sure that the all of the divisions are evened out.
