This country thrives on competition and are willing to pay big bucks to enjoy it. For instance:
Game 7 Lakers vs Celtics. at the Staple Center.

Well aby sportsman especially a physical sport.
Has a potential shelf life of a five year best performance period.
That being, when they are in their prime athletic ability, in whatever sport they compete in.
For that reason, the potential for that said sportsman to get injured in that period is highly likely. Because of that, the demand is their for high pay.
In the curcumstance they do get badly injured. They may never be able to work again , even in a regular job. As the injury might be permanent.
Thats why they get high pay.
Imagine a football player, breaking his back or neck. Never being able to work again.
They need the high pay to in effect support anything that may happen.
There is the market factor as the others have said. the better sportsman , the better pay. That is the corporation aspect of things.

I find it ludicrous that a person who throws a ball around all day gets more pay than people who take interests in others lives, or people who sacrifice to make ends meet. BUT...American's are willing to pay the price for the tickets, so in that light, yes--it is justified. Americans don't have to support the pay that goes into the industry, but they do. That's not the athlete's fault.

It is not justified. Sports are controlled by Corporations. And they will charge as much as the market will bare. The good news is that we are already seeing bankruptcies in sports. It is time for the greedy to eat some humble pie.

The market determines pay. Just cuz is seems like a lot to you does not mean it is inflated.
