98 jeep cherokee shifting problems?

My Cherokee seems to be running fine, but when I put it in drive, the shifter looks like it's in the neutral position. the N is highlighted instead of the D. It's an automatic and other than that it seems to drive fine. Should I take it to the mechanic or did something in the display move around? please help!

    The shift linkage could be slipping. It should be checked out before the vehicle takes off because you thought it was in Park when it wasn't.
