Why is it that when Wisconsin makes the national news, its either for violence or a major /facepalm?
I love my state, but why can't we be recognized for all of the great things our citizens have accomplished? Most of us CAN point out Arizona on the map. Many of us have even bothered to learn INTERNATIONAL geography. I've lived in Wisconsin almost my whole life and I can find the United Kingdom on a map after just a few moments of searching. HOW COME THAT'S NOT ON THE NEWS??
Wisconsin really is a great place. We have more then just people who get fat on cheese then get drunk on beer then shoot up the place and then ride off on their Harleys. We have cannibals too! I kid, I kid, we have a quite a few lovely tourist traps, I mean, vacation destinations that AREN'T Native American Casinos/Gift Shops filled with overpriced "authentic" Indian crap.
In all seriousness, I think Wisconsin gets a bad rap in the media. The little bit of coverage we do get is limited to fat jokes, jokes about serial killers and cheese and/or beer jokes. Everywhere in America has fat people, why put it on Wisconsin?? And California actually produces more cheese then we do now, they have been for a few years. Give them the cheese jokes!
I know this is turning into a rant, but honestly, don't judge all of Wisconsin by Peggy West, especially the people who live outside of her district and didn't vote for her.
Sarah: The fact that you couldn't see the intended comedy in my comments highlights this situation.
I'm not "ashamed" of Native American gaming, so put your race card away. It's the low quality merchandise sold in most gift shops and convenience stores (Native American or otherwise) that bugs me.
And I know quite well that casinos bring in revenue to the state. No one needs to spend their life working in casinos to figure this out.
The Dells and Door County ARE tourist traps.

You want to be on the news because you can find the U.K. on a map? Sorry that's not an accomplishment, no matter where you live. Personally, I think you are buying into what the media has to say about our state more than anyone else is. Wisconsin is a great state and it's really too bad that you think that the things that make Wisconsin great are not great at all.
I don't know why you are so ashamed of cheese. Yes, California might produce more cheese than we do, but it definitely does not taste as good. Wisconsin cheese is awesome. When I lived out of state, I often had "shopping lists" to fulfill for others mainly containing cheese and beer. People love our cheese, and much of the beer produced here in Wisconsin by our microbreweries is well know yet not available elsewhere. Why are these products so well known and loved? Because Wisconsinites who produce these products take pride in their work to produce a quality product. I find no shame in that whatsoever.
As for destination spots- there are many and they are VERY well known. Wisconsin Dells is home to America's largest waterpark, as well as several other waterparks, both indoor and outdoor, and people flock from many states to stay there. Door County and many of the northern areas receive tourism from many other states. The entire state is utilized by out of state hunters and fishermen.
As for your attempt to slam Native casinos and gift shops, maybe you should visit one before you pass judgment. I have never seen fake Indian crafts for sale in Casino gift shop. The majority of what is for sale in these sorts of places is hand made by local tribal members who take pride in their work.
I have worked in three of the casinos in Wisconsin and tourists come from across the country to visit Wisconsin's casinos. Many people have commented that they love coming to the casinos here because the people are so nice and the area so beautiful. The state takes a BIG chunk of money from each Nation that has gaming via gaming compacts and the majority of casino employees are non-Native. So, if you are so ashamed of Native gaming in Wisconsin, I suggest you take it up with your congressman.

Some of my family is from Wisconsin but my parents relocated to AZ before I was born. I have been there many times and it is a beautiful state.
I'm in a unique situation in that I have roots there but live in AZ, and the whole Peggy West thing has taken center stage. I also run a Conservative blog that lately has turned into a full time SB1070 argument.
We know that all of Wisconsin isn't like Peggy "I can see Mexico from my house" West, but it makes for some good humor. If you want a laugh you can check out my satire of some new mapping software featuring Peggy West.

Relax, my Cheeshead friend and enjoy the great pleasures of being from our fair state---the land of Jeffrey Dahmer and Senator McCarthy, the birthplace of Golda Maier, home Schlitz Beer and Happy Days and That 70's show. The place there President Theodore Roosavelt was shot, yet insisted on finishing his speech before going to the hospital, home of UW-Madison, known as the "Berkeley of the Midwest". the Dells and the Ducks and the PACKERS, c'mon.

Peggy West certainly did not represent her state well that day. So I do feel sorry for the few sensible Wisconsans up there... You have my sympathy.
But ya gotta admit... Her pompous rant about the Arizona law and call for a boycott was pretty funny.

rofl, find our beloved nation on a map, omg, proves my theorum about our nice cousins geographic info,the fact you lot have to look us up on a map makes one glad you not in charge of overseas deployment. Anyway as someone who spends an awful lot of time doing research win as one calls it is one of the funniest states in the good ole usa, where else on the globe can one get stunning articles such as the betty boop collectibles guide. Perhaps they'll be a time when your state rises above Tennessee as seen as the 2nd funniest state but until then enjoy the leg pulling.
