L= Leah S= Sue J= John when you consider that Leah is 6 years older than Sue, L= 6+S and John is 5 years older than Leah's age (6+S) J=5+(6+S) =11+S S+J+L=40-one Sub "J=11+S" and "L= 6+S" into J and L: S+(11+S)+(6+S)=40-one Simplify: 3S+17=40-one Subtract 17 from the two factors: 3S=24 Divide the two factors with the aid of 3: S=8 Sue is 8!

the answer is C. 14
let leah = x
therefore sue = x-6
and john is x+5
the total of their ages is x+x-6+x+5=41
this simplifies to 3x-1 =41
3x=41+1
3x=42
x=42/3
x=14
