Why doesn't Obama bring back the WPA?

I think Obama may be too timid to bring back the WPA, however. He's already getting accused of being a "socialist" and a "communist" and a "terrorist" as it is. If he had the federal government providing direct employment to the estimated 15 million Americans who need it, the conservative critics -- libertarians and John Birch Society, the Tea Party etc. -- would go ballistic.

In addition, though, Obama is supposed to have stated that he doesn't favor government "make work" projects. He wants the government engaged in promoting "green jobs," but almost entirely in the private sector.
