What the best caliber for long distance shooting?

Taking in to consideration distance and accuracy.

Update:

The .375 CT Intervention using .300 Jamison's is out-classing everything out there right now including it's brother in .408. Distance wise it's way more accuracte than anything close in caliber including .50, .416, .408 etc. Anyone know of anything else? I have heard some people are working on a 414 Gn at "Desert Tactical Arms" that is killing everything but still in test phase. All information will be appreciated.

You will get many answers, as there are many variables; bullet weight, powder charge, wind, altitude, humidity, etc. Some of the longest shots were made with drastically different calibers. Shots of the greatest distances, up to the range of a mile, have been made with the 7.62mm, 5.56mm, and all the way up to the mammoth .50 Cal.

Distance is what you make of it. Accuracy is something you have to develop. Neither are gained without practice.

What the best weapon is depends a lot on you; if you're a 2 foot midget, a 50 cal probably isn't for you, but if you're an 8 foot giant it probably is.

I've heard the AWM .308 Lapua magnum is absolutely amazing though; the record for longest confirmed kill was set using this as 2470m. I've only fired one a few times, but the grouping you get are amazing. The bullet's got a nice high BC so it won't be too affected by wind, drop etc. I'm not sure if these are on the market (since they're relatively new military sniper rifles, but if you can get your hands on one of these it'd be the best).
