How to remove water from gas tank?

We have inboard marine engine, boat has been sitting for 3-4 years w/half tank of gas. Engine now sputters a lot especially at higher RPM. Pretty sure there's water in the gas, I've experienced it before. How do you remove water? Is there an additive we can put in the gas, or do we need to drain the tank?

After that long sitting it could be water or the gas has gone bad. Drain the tank and start fresh.

You might try a product like Heet. It's supposed to help but I would guess it's also the gas went bad if you didn't put in a gas stabilizer.

With that amount of time, I would drain the tank, and I was just recently able to get a plastic hand pump from Ace hardware for a couple of bucks. I'm sure you can get the gas out at least down to a couple of gallons, then a fill up with good gas.

many gas tanks have drain plugs that can be removed with a wrench some do not and would require the tank to be removed to drain them! since that can be a total pain to do, I would prbably drain the tank as much as possible then find the very lowest spot on the tank and punch a very small hole in the tank using a sharp punce about the size of an ice pick to drain what was left then repair the hole with some gas tank patch epoxy found in most auto stores.

    Hi,

Not only is there probably water but the old gas good and stale, best thing to do would be to drain the tank and put fresh gas in,always the best solution.

You can find some stuff probably, but you'll most likely have to put up with the symptoms of bad gas for awhile.

Draining the tank is the best way to go.
