I know a "Top Contributor" gave the final answer he/she must be right they are wrong. I had a DirecTv remote(The off white one with the black rubber piece), that actually was able to control my air conditioner in my living room, so much to the fact that I had to cover the infra red sensor on the AC. I have also had a remote that was designed to control many different electronics(ceiling fans AC's TV's etc.) that was made by Sony. So yes your remote might be able to work with your AC especially if it's a Universal remote as there are so many brands that the remote can be programmed on of them may well be the frequency for your AC. Or you just can buy a remote that does it all I know Sony and many other companies make them now, but they are pricey anywhere from 80 to 200 bucks.

Chances are very little. However, we can not overrule the possibility.
A Remote Controls turns "on" and "off" infrared signals at different rates (i.e. frequency) to communicate with the sensor which is programmed to read only certain frequencies. For an example, if a RC reciever is programmed to switch a device on receiving infrared signal switching "on" and "off" at the rate of 40 times a second, any remote control which switches "on" and "off" at the same rate can be used to switched on that device.
So what matters is not devices like TV or AC but the frequency of the infrared signal.
