The apparent volume of distribution (commonly abbreviated VD) relates the concentration of a drug in a particular compartment to the initial dosage or bolus. Therefore, if one of the VD experiments shows that the drug remains confined to the input component, then the drug is not likely to travel very far from an injection or administration site for medical/clinical use. However, if all the compartments contain equal amounts of the drug sample, then the drug would be expected to circulate over relatively far distances. However, this is only an indication: some drugs that have negative findings in the trials may find exceptional permeability into systemic bloodflow and some drugs that have very distributed VD results may be metabolized in vivo.
