How do you determine true ownership of a dummy corporation?

I'm beginning to suspect that a company I'm doing business with is actually a new business for a company with which I don't want to do business. How can I find out if the original company is behind the new one?

Update:

I had already checked with the state corporation commission, but it only gave the name of a lawyer and didn't state who, if anyone, had hired that lawyer.

That information would be available at your STATE Corporation Commission

usually a business has to be licensed see if you can find out who the license it under and do research on that person and see if they are affiliated with the other company.
