Hi! Here are some tidbits of info and you can go from there...
First of all, you can go to www.gohawaii.com and find out more about each island. They have a "Choose an Island" page here: http://www.gohawaii.com/statewide/choose-an-island... where you can read a short description of each island and more info is just a click away.
The main touristy islands are: The Big Island, Maui, and Oahu...
The Hawaiian Islands were and are still being formed by volcanoes, but the only live ones are in Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island of Hawaii. It's the largest island, so you should rent a car to get around.
The best island for snorkeling is Maui (specifically the south side), with the Molikini Crater providing some of the best snorkeling in the world. Lots of tropical fish, sea turtles, etc. If you go to Maui in the winter, it is the humpback whale breeding season and they will be everywhere. If you like hiking and nature trails, there is the Iao Valley State Park. And there is a town called Lahaina that has lots of restaurants, bars, art galleries, shopping, etc. You should rent a car for this island.
There is also good snorkeling on the Oahu. You can also swim with sharks, and dolphins at the Sea Life Park. Home of the state capitol, it has a more of a "big city" feel with more metropolitan conveniences. Oahu has the biggest population and the best public transportation system. If you like to party, this is the island for you. Oahu will also be the most affordable island when you're looking into booking flights and hotels. And, again, because of the public transportation, you may be able to get around without a rent-a-car.
The other islands are less populated and have more of an "island getaway" feel...
Lanai is more for "opulent romantic getaways," with it's luxury resorts, golf courses, tranquility and few crowds. There are no traffic lights on this island.
Molokai is practically untouched and has one of the largest white sand beaches in Hawaii.
Kauai has a lot of outdoor adventures. You can go zip-lining over the jungles, hike to waterfalls, go mountain-tubing down waterways, etc.
What ever you choose to do, have fun and be safe! Cheers!
