Ideas for a bee unit study?

My children and I will be starting a bee unit study soon, and I'm in need of ideas. I have some picture books, a NOVA video, and some easy games and crafts. I have a fifth grader, second grader and preschooler. I feel I'm well covered for the preschooler, but need more in depth activities for the older children. Any ideas, preferably free/cheap?

Have you seen the program Ruff Ruffman on PBS? They had a bee segment, maybe you could cull some of their stuff.

You can also call your local state Department of Conservation to see if they have a program about them; one of my DOC locations has an actual glass apiary you can visit, so you can observe the bees up close and personal. Try your local "butterfly house," as well as the botanical gardens. If they don't have bees, they might know an organization that does. And lastly, your local extension office may have some recommendations on where to find a beehive.

bear in mind which you have early rookies and their college studies are constrained to a million or 2 years. Take time to coach all the HOWs (concepts): getting a turn, getting a drink, making use of the pencil sharpener properly (this one is great!), permission to apply the washing room, shifting from chairs to the carpet (voices, bodies...), lunch concepts... elevating a hand is considerable, no crayons or glue sticks interior the sharpener, and that i take advantage of the ASL letter "t" sign for the washing room, they only carry it up and that i comprehend. in case you enable them to assert "bathing room" it is going to become a lecture room crammed with "ME TOO!" Make administration as concrete as achievable. i take advantage of a chart with faces- happy, medium, wiggly, and unhappy. They each and every have a clip that strikes with habit. It additionally has the implications DRAWN next to them. bear in mind maximum of them can not study yet so which you will desire to function photograph clues to very almost each and every thing! have exciting! i easily omit my first graders (third now). i'm hoping to head returned next 3 hundred and sixty 5 days!
