I need a lot of help about 4-h?
So I'm 12 and wanted to raise a sheep/lamb for 4-h. What is necessary for 4-h? How much would it cost? What do you do? I live in California if that makes a difference. And how much money do you make usually? Give me please what you do with your animal and everything of that nature. Thanks...sorry it was in the wrong section! there wasnt a right section for it..

First you need to be enrolled in the 4-H program and be a member in good standing to be able to show or sell a market lamb/sheep at either your county fair or any 4-H event. Look up your county 4-H office by doing a search online or contacting your county Extension Service Office listed in the government section of your phone book. Or you can use this link
Once you are enrolled in 4-H you need to ask your County 4-H Youth Adviser which 4-H clubs in your area have sheep projects. It is important to join a club that has a sheep project so that your leader will be able to teach you about all the specific questions. The 4-H year has just ended for 2009-2010 (July 1) so you will be enrolling for the 2010-2011 4-H year. I HIGHLY recommend if you have never done an animal project before to observe other 4-H members with lambs and ask them questions about cost, feed, handling, etc. It may be too late to purchase and feed out a market lamb for your fair as most require you own the animal 90 days prior to fair. However make a point of going to your county fair and spending time around the 4-H sheep and asking lots of questions. There is no specific amount that you can earn on a market animal...it varies depending on your costs, which are: purchase price of animal, feed, equipment, transportation and veterinarian costs. You will also have entry fees and cost of your 4-H uniform. Your project leader will teach you how to purchase all these things, how to get buyers for your project and how to purchase, feed and handle your animal. It is possible to make a nice profit on your market animal with assistance by your 4-H leader and parents. That profit varies but can be several hundred dollars if you have a champion market animal.
Do you live in the city or country? One big thing to consider before doing an animal project is if you have access to a place to keep this animal and what you have to pay if you are leasing a pen or pasture. Market projects require DAILY involvement not just feeding and watering and average 2-3 hrs per day during the time you own the animal.
I hope you find this information useful. I was a 4-H member for 12 years owning and raising beef, sheep, swine and horse projects and have been a 4-H leader for 6 years.
Good luck and be sure to do a lot of research before you get started!
