Are the 3D Blu-rays backwards compatible with 2d players?
Will I be able to watch the movie on my player in 2D? Just wondering because I plan on updating, but it will be awhile. I may go ahead and buy the films in 3D and watch in 2D until I get a new TV, receiver and player.

Yes.
"the specs will be backwards compatible, allowing 2D discs to still play on 3D Blu-ray players, as well as allow 3D discs to play on current market 2D Blu-ray players (of course only in 2D)."
