Do I need special speakers for a turn-table?

For our anniversary, I'm having my boyfriend's turn-table shipped from California. But his speakers are too big to ship, but I'm not too savvy on this stuff - so I'm wondering, if I wanted to buy him new speakers, would I need to buy special speakers for a turn-table or would any speakers work? Or would I need to see what kind of record-player he has first?

Thanks in advance. :)

If it is just a turntable, it won't work through speakers. It needs an amplifier as well ... and not just any amplifier. It needs an amplifier with a special input for a turntable or it will not work. A turntable puts out a TINY voltage that has to be boosted by a phono pre-amp which is built into some amplifiers. Only older amplifiers are likely to have a suitable input but there is another solution. You can buy a plug-in phono pre-amp from shops like Maplin (in the UK). Expect pay about £10 for it. The output from the pre-amp then plugs into any spare input sockets on the amplifier.

If the turntable has a built-in amplifier, then just about any speakers will do provided you don't turn it up too loud. If you want it loud, you need to buy speakers that can cope with the power of the amplifier. For domestic use, you are unlikely to need speakers capable of handling more than 5-10 watts. Mine are 30 watt speakers but I rarely turn the volume above a quarter of the way round and that is seriously loud for indoors.

Nope. look - a house theater receiver is so a lot extra beneficial than an amp. it must be waiting to take an optical and coaxial digital connection and enhance it to 6 channels of sound. then you definitely prefer a 6 channel amplifier to potential ... 6 audio device. you are able to of course purchase a pre-processor for about $4 hundred that does this - yet you nevertheless prefer a 6 channel amplifier. a sturdy Onkyo TX-SR505 or 605 receiver runs approximately $380 (extra inexpensive on line). This seems after the reading and amplifying. you are able to positioned motor vehicle audio device into enclosures yet - evaluate making use of a motor vehicle air-conditioner to kick back your comprehensive front room - it is not probably designed for that great area. A coaxial motor vehicle speaker is a ... compromise to objective and extra healthful a speaker right into a small area (as a results of fact motor vehicle doors are small). it is going to artwork - yet wont sound as stable as a common set of 5 video demonstrate-style audio device and a self-powered subwoofer.
