Right-click a powerpoint file (ends in .ppt or .pptx), go to open with > choose default program. Then change the settings so that all files of that type are opened in Open Office. Or PowerPoint. Just make sure it's not excel.

Powepoint in Open Office works. This could be a case where the one who opens your email does not have an OpenOffice installed.

Also, since Microsoft Powerpoint is widely used, when saving presentations from an Open Office Powerpoint, do these steps:

File>Save As>Desktop(or wherever you want to save it)>then under Save as type, hit the dropdrown arrow and go to (select) Microsoft Powerpoint 97/2000/XP [.ppt] or [.pps].> then Hit Save

    Hope this helps
