    O Prophet! Tell thy wives and daughters, and the believing women, that they should cast their outer garments (Jalbab) over their persons (when abroad): that is most convenient, that they should be known (as such) and not molested. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. 33:59

    And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof; that they should draw their veils (khymar) over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husband's fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers or their brothers' sons, or their sisters' sons, or their women, or the slaves whom their right hands possess, or male servants free of physical needs, or small children who have no sense of the shame of sex; and that they should not strike their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden ornaments. And O ye Believers! turn ye all together towards Allah, that ye may attain Bliss. 24:3

    Source(s): it's obviously fard this shouldn't even be up for discussion!

    Hijab is fard because Allah said so through His book and His final messenger.

    Hijab is Fard but Burqa is not Fard

    No it certainly is not fard. In fact Hijab as understood by the various sect members has nothing to do with the Quranic injunctions of dressing modestly which apply to both men and women. In fact the very term Hijab as understood and promoted by sect centric Mullahs is not a Quranic term, the word Hijab in the Quran does not refer to an article of clothing and we must refrain from using Quranic terms to mean something other than the Quranic meaning when discussing Islam, in this case a curtain or divider of physical space for privacy, There are many other specific injunctions in the Quran to address the ''issue'' . Lets not confuse the two issues to promote a subjugating innovation of turning half of humanity into penguins :)

    Please go here for a detailed analysis;

    http://lifecheat.blogspot.com/2009/07/dress-code-f...

    Excerpt

    We have to look at the issue from inside out, we have to agree on the part (s) of body, either fully exposed and/or apparent through clothing that can be seen by the husband and the other members of the subset, that is the father, the father in law, small children etc. Once we have identified which parts of body, we can than settle the issue of which parts of body are not to be shown in public. In terms of set and subset, to show to the subset but not show to the general set. Logic dictates that the verse is not referring to hiding your whole body from head to toe in public. Because, if the injunction were to hide your whole body in public than the exceptions dictate you are allowed to show your whole body to your husband along with the father and father in law, that would be simply absurd. The inclusion of husband in the list is very important to point us in the right direction.

    One thing is very clear, I repeat, two set of people are detailed, a general set (everybody) and just one single exhaustive subset with detailed qualification as to who should be included in this single subset. There is no indication to split this subset further. Now where are you going to run into all these people, why of course at home, it is not about going around to the individual members of this group but the place where all these people assemble.

    I believe you can be modest w/o hijab. It contradicts any sort of justness that women have to cover up to such an extent, while men don't. I don't understand why a woman can't be comfortable and modest at the same time. (such as respectful clothing) I don't see why showing your forearms or ankles is regarded as sexual.
